Nancy Pelosi Deserves Infamy For Her Stance On Impeachment by Robert Covington Jr.
The Democratic Party was able to recapture the House of Representatives due to Donald Trump’s grossness as a human being, mass turnout of black and brown Americans despite racist voter suppression laws, the courage of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony during the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings that galvanized a plurality of white women voters and overall toxicity of Republican policies.
Nancy Pelosi’s role in the Democratic Party’s return to power was minimal. Yes, she did criticize Trump and the Republican Party leading up to the election in 2018, but as Minority leader at the time, she did very little to mobilize a democratic message and response to Trump’s tyranny and assault on democracy. Pelosi rode the wave of other people’s courage and outrage to get back into power.
Since her return to Speaker of the House, which required cajoling, maneuvering and strong arming her way back to the position, Pelosi has been tasked with the enormous responsibility in determining how to address the most corrupt presidency in American history. Thus far, Pelosi is working very hard to go down in history as one of the most inept leaders that the nation has ever seen in a time of great crisis.
Pelosi lied to the democratic base, voters in general and fellow democrats in Congress by giving the impression that she may move toward impeachment proceedings if the Robert Mueller report proved to show impeachable offenses. The Mueller report shed light on multiple acts of obstruction and conspiracy that clearly show impeachable offenses. Yet, Pelosi has not moved toward impeachment hearings because she never intended on impeaching President Trump. The Mueller report exposed her cowardice and naked political calculation for all to see.
During this time of Pelosi’s depressing strategy of caution and cowardice, she’s chastised fellow Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib for expressing raw emotion of anger for inaction against this mafia president. Pelosi has refused to listen to her own Judiciary committee chairman Jerry Nadler’s calls for impeachment. She ignores her own statements of Trump’s constitutional violations and continues to do everything possible to stop the talk and movement of impeachment within her caucus.
Pelosi’s non-impeachment strategy has given Donald Trump the confidence to continue to obstruct justice, ignore subpoenas of his administration and completely stonewall investigations. Donald Trump and his family continue to be national security risks, Trump continues to profit off his presidency and the torturing of children in American concentration camps are happening with no repercussions.
There’s been no sense of urgency to obtain Trump’s taxes, no desire to enforce compliance of subpoenas even though Congress has the option of hefty fines and imprisonment via inherent contempt at their disposal. Pelosi has become a major liability to Democrats and democracy that desperately needs politically significant accountability thrust upon the most dangerous president in our lifetime.
There’s sad irony in all of this. Pelosi is choosing to align herself in history with Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell as co-conspirators in aiding, abetting and emboldening a reckless and unfit president. Pelosi is just like McConnell in that she’s willing to tolerate Trump’s daily abuse of power because the goal is to slog through until 2020. Pelosi is just like McConnell in that she sees the sickness and incompetence of Trump as useful to maintaining power. Pelosi is just like McConnell in that she’s putting Party over country.
Unfortunately, Pelosi is reducing herself to a horrible place in American history. Her paranoia is grounded in fear, irrational thinking and racism, and it’s having a detrimental effect on the country. There is nothing courageous about Pelosi and we need to get used to it for the next fifteen months. As millions of Americans and world citizens suffer in varying degrees because of this lawless president, Pelosi will continue to convince herself that the ends justify the means.
Pelosi deserves the infamy that awaits her in the history books.
